Buyers turn out despite Chinese New Year celebrations

Timed as it was at the start of the 2015 Chinese New Year, Philips Auctions was pleasantly surprised at the excellent results achieved for its first sale of the year – given that normally the auction house would expect a strong turnout among Asian buyers whose numbers were reduced due to New Year celebrations.

Jewellery draws the crowds at Philips Auctions

Perhaps it had something to do with the approaching festive season, but jewellery items were a strong drawcard at Philips Auctions Monday December 8 jewellery auction.

Almost 150 bidders filled the auction room and, at the end of the night, 75 per cent of the items had been sold at more than 130 per cent above reserve.

Brett Whiteley once more in the spotlight

Brett Whiteley’s Washing the Salt Off II 1984 was hotly contested at Sotheby’s Australia November 25 Sydney Important Australian & International Art auction, changing hands for $976,000 (including buyers premium) on a $800,000- $1,000,000 estimate.

The auction, comprising 72 paintings, reached $5.36 million – 65 per cent by volume and 102 per cent by value.

A 1740s Italian Lacca Povera painted and parcel gilt bureau from Venice was the focus of intense bidding at Sotheby’s Australia October 29 Fine Asian, Australian and European Arts & Design auction – changing hands for an outstanding $67,100 including buyers premium.

The auction totalled $1.06 million – 66 per cent volume and 101 per cent by value.

Nellie Melba travelling clock brings strong bidding

After an inconspicuous start to Philips Auctions October sale, there was standing room only for both decorative arts and jewellery auctions on Sunday October 26 and Monday October 27.

Two hundred and thirty seven bidders crowded into the auction room for decorative arts, which resulted in a 75 per cent by volume sale rate, while 100 attended the jewellery sale for a 70 per cent volume sale rate result.

A Mercedes Benz SL-class bonnet carrying a typical Jean Paul Gaultier design and signed by the international designer sold for $11,500 at Sotheby’s Australia October 29 auction with all the money donated to Brainwave – an organisation supporting those affected by paediatric neurological conditions on children and their families.

Penfolds Grange auction a great drawcard for collectors

It was a great day for wine buffs at Philips Auctions September sale when 25 bottles of Penfolds Grange Bin 95 were quickly snapped up.

The highest priced bottle was a 1994 vintage – which sold for $755 including buyers’ premium – while the others (apart from a bottle of 2007 which reached $542.80) each went for more than $600.

Global bids prevail in European furniture and art auction

A collection of European furniture and art dating from the Middle Ages attracted competitive global bidding when it went under the hammer on September 14 at Mossgreen.

It is the first time such an important collection has been auctioned in Australia and, when coupled with the Australian indigenous art on offer, sold for $1.74 million (or 164 per cent by value).

Given the success of the international bidders, many of the items are now set to return to Europe....

Silver-plated racing car inkwell brings strong competition

An early art deco German WMF inkwell with a silver-plated pewter racing car as its centrepiece almost tripled its auction estimate at Amanda Addams Auctions September sale when it sold for $3400.

Other good auction results included a pair of antique Cantonese figural and cameo decorated Famille rose ceramic vases that brought $1300 on a  $900-$1200 estimate.
