Classic Corvettes bring great auction prices

Eight Classic American Cars from the collection of photographer Neil Fletcher sold out at Mossgreen on September 1.

The eight cars realised a total of $453,474 with highlights including a 1960 Chevrolet Corvette C1 (LHD) which sold for $106,750 (inc. BP) against a pre-sale estimate of $65,000-85,000 and a 1959 Chevrolet Corvette C1 (RHD) which sold for $82,960 (inc. BP) against a pre-sale estimate of $60,000-80,000.

New Howard Arkley record

Virtual real estate appears to be performing as well as the real thing, with an enormous Howard Arkley painting setting a new auction record for the artist during lively bidding at Bonhams August auction, which reaped total sales of $2.2 million.

A Large House with Fence, 1998, painted the year before Arkley died, wassold to a private collector for $463,600, surpassing the previous artist record, set in 2007, of $401,442 for Family Home, 1988.

Chinese vessel and jewellery bring satisfying auction results

With more than a dozen new registered bidders and 600 regulars attending Amanda Addams Auctions August sale, many items on offer sold well above estimate.

After auction sales also were solid particularly for Hagenauer items (all of which sold) and jewellery pieces, with the auction house finishing with an overall 82 per cent clearance rate.

Sporting memorabilia a big auction hit

Cricket postcards from the turn of the 20th century and an original poster from cartoonist Weg of Footscray’s 1954 Victorian Football League win were the highlights of Mossgreen’s August sporting memorabilia auction.

The cards, published by Foster of Brighton from about 1900-1910 sold for $7930 (including buyers premium) on an estimate of $1200-$1500, while the Weg poster changed hands for $7320.

Single vendor Aboriginal art auction a resounding success

Philips Auctions July sale was highlighted by a single vendor Aboriginal art collection that resulted in a 113 per cent by value and 95 per cent by volume windfall for the owner.

The collection belonged to the former South Melbourne-based Blue Door Gallery owner Steve Ralph who has now moved to the United Kingdom following his wife Rachael’s new position as head of HR for one of Australia’s largest and most successful consumer law firms.

Part 1 of Mossgreen’s inaugural July auction of Australian Indigenous & Oceanic Art achieved strong and encouraging results with $1,461,682 including BP sold and many new artist records set.

Strong jewellery result for Amanda Addams July auction

Jewellery was the strong suit in Amanda Addams Auctions July sale with the highlight a pair of 18-carat white gold and diamond stud earrings that sold for $10,500.

Another strong return was the handmade 18-carat white gold tanzanite and diamond ring – knocked down for $5500 – while a white gold aquamarine and diamond ring changed hands for $3000, and a diamond Rubilite pendant for $2800.

Sotheby’s Australia’s July Fine Asian, Australian & European Arts & Design auction achieved a total of $1,264,005 including buyer’s premium, or 68.5% by volume and 129.5% by value.

An 18-carat gold and diamond Rolex wristwatch “The Oyster Perpetual Datejust” was a top selling item at Amanda Addams Auctions June sale – going under the hammer for $7122 including buyers premium.

Other jewellery items of note included a handmade 18-carat white gold and ruby diamond ring that sold for $3324 and an 18-carat white gold and black diamond ring that brought a similar amount.
