Christmas jewellery bonanza at Philips Auctions
While some of the top pieces of jewellery at Philips Auctions December sale carry thousands of dollars in estimates, many of the 230 lots are in the more affordable hundreds of dollars range and would make ideal Christmas gifts.
The auction, from 12pm Sunday December 13 at 47 Glenferrie Road, Malvern, features a range to suit all comers including a striking 14-carat gold abstract boulder open and diamond drop necklace (lot 230) with a catalogue estimate of $10,000-$20,000.

Timed online jewellery auction despite Stage 4 lockdown
During the strict Stage 4 lockdowns imposed by the Victorian Government to combat surging COVID-19 virus cases in the state, Philips Auctions has been able to hold timed online jewellery auctions to cater for auction goers.
Its latest efforts ends from 6pm on Monday August 17 and involves 101 affordable lots of rings, earrings, pendants, brooches and necklaces.
Typical is a large emerald dress ring (lot 100) with a $1500-$1800 estimate, while a pair of green sapphire and diamond drop earrings (lot 101) is listed for $900-$1300.

A magic 100 lots greet viewers of Philips Auctions timed online Modern & Antique Jewellery sale due to end from 8pm Tuesday July 21.
This is the second online jewellery auction the auction house has held since coronavirus lockdowns began in Melbourne in March this year.
The city is now in its second Stage 3 lockdown – ostensibly for six weeks – but rumours are now rife that the Victorian Government could impose Stage 4 restrictions in coming days.

Philips anticipates live auction after pandemic layoff
An air of anticipation pervades Philips Auctions rooms at 47 Glenferrie Road, Malvern as staff eagerly await the start of their first live decorative arts auction since the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown swung into action mid-March and all sales suddenly ceased.
Up to 20 auction goers are allowed in the rooms at any one time with more able to join proceedings online or via absentee or telephone bidding from noon Sunday June 14.
One of the highlights is the catalogue front cover cloisonne Buddha (lot 88), a magnificent large scale bronzed copper probably Republic era piece.

Among the major features are a 19th century European school portrait of a young lady in a black dress with lace collar (lot 367), a Regency style early to mid-20th century mahogany bureau plat (lot 432) and a late 19th century Louis XVI giltwood canape with musical score motifs imprinted on the aqua silk taffeta (lot 436).

17th century Italian cabinet a Christmas auction highlight
A rare mid-17th century northern Italian rosewood, ivory and ebony cabinet on a 19th century stand (lot 387) is one of the strong antique furniture highlights at Philips Auctions forthcoming Decorative & Fine Arts sale from noon Sunday December 1 at 47 Glenferrie Road, Malvern.
The cabinet contains eight cedar lined drawers each with pen engraved ivory plaques depicting hunting, fishing, fowling and hawking scenes and in its centre is a Renaissance style cupboard with the drawers and the base inlaid with ivory neoclassical pictures.
