Three Georgian flame mahogany secretaire bookcases are highlights of a comprehensive range of English, French country and Australia cedar, silky oak and blackwood furniture from homes throughout Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula at E.J. The auction features twin pedestal and other desks, a fine selection of contemporary gilded and French design mirrors and a pair of light brown leather Chesterfield settees.

Charles Blackman’s The Pink 1953 – acquired directly from the artist’s solo exhibition of that year and held in a private collection ever since – will be auctioned for the first time in Sotheby’s Australia’s forthcoming Important Australian Art sale from 6.30pm Wednesday August 16 at Intercontinental Sydney, 117 Macquarie Street, Sydney.

The three Brownlow Medals (awarded each year to the best and fairest Australian Rules Football player) won by Essendon legend Dick Reynolds will be part of Mossgreen’s forthcoming Sporting Memorabilia auction from 10am Tuesday August 15 at 935 High Street, Armadale.

One of the best rovers the game has seen, Reynolds played 320 games (a Victorian Football League record that stood until 1974) for Essendon between 1933 and 1951.

He won the Brownlow Medal – the highest acknowledgement to which an Australian Rules player can aspire – in 1934, 1937 and 1938.

Keith Clarke is fondly remembered as the wardrobe supervisor for Channel 2 – for which he earned his nickname the “designing man”.

A man of great style and talent, in addition to his agility with needle and thread Keith was a costume designer for the Australian Opera, Australian Ballet and the ABC.

His most well known design was for Dame Joan Sutherland’s 1976 performance in Idomeneo for which he still had the original costume sketches when he died.

One of the major highlights is the upper section of an Egyptian cedar wood and bronze inlay anthropoid sarcophagus lid about 600B.C. from the Late Period Dynasty XXVI.

A solid cedar casing for a nobleman, the sarcophagus is gesso covered and painted with a black tripartite wig, visage in red – the lips drawn into a slight smile above a rounded chin and false beard.
