Carmichael (1800-1868) was an English marine painter born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland.

An 1880s Edward William Godwin (1833-1886) English Aesthetic Movement art cabinet (lot 198) is the major highlight of Leski Auctions forthcoming Decorative Arts, Watches & Collectables sale from 11am Sunday October 28 at 727-729 High Street, Armadale.

Godwin was a progressive English architect-designer renowned initially for his “Ruskinian Gothic-style” creations of mid-Victorian Britain including The Guild Hall in Northampton.

He was among the first European designers to include the arts of Japan, which in 1853 had opened its doors to the Western world, in his works.

Leonard Joel holds first auction in new Sydney premises

Decorative arts is the subject of Leonard Joel’s first auction at its new Sydney premises in The Bond, Queen Street, Woollahra.

Built in 1870 and originally a Masonic Lodge, this historic building contains a ground floor gallery and space to host viewings, auctions and other events.

The decorative arts auction, from 6pm Tuesday October 23, includes several local and interstate collections – including rare and important 18th century porcelain.

Auction reflects Melbourne Spring racing scene

An historic sterling silver horse racing cup has been discovered among contents to be auctioned at a Brighton mansion in Melbourne.

The cup – commemorating the 1823 York Spring Meeting in England – was found among various other treasures at 9 St Ninians Road, Brighton as auctioneer Phil Caldwell and his team were busy cataloguing the items for sale.

The onsite auction will be held from 11am Sunday October 21. 

The auction is being held under instruction from teh Morris family with the father now in his mid-90s.

Chinese snuff bottles and scrolls vie for attention at Melbourne auction

A single owner collection of more than 200 Chinese snuff bottles and a private South Australian collection of Chinese scrolls head Gibson’s forthcoming Estate & Collector auction from 10.30am Sunday October 14 at Level 1, 885-889 High Street, Armadale.

Many of the snuff bottles are painted on the inside of the glass – a fine decoration such as that featured in lot 92, a work of art ‘The Lan Ting Shu’ dated Beijing 1898 and Wuxian 1901 and attributed to Ding Erzhong – or are of an unusual shape such as lot 50, a 1974 sponge coral ‘iron tree’ example.

Leonard Joel’s first stand-alone Asian art auction contains a diverse selection of items spanning the entire Asian region designed to appeal to all comers and features six private Australian collections.

The sale starts at 6.30pm Monday October 8 at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra and one of the collections belonged to the late Gerry Virtue and his wife Pamela who met in 1961 – two years after he spent six months on the hippie trail from Calcutta to London with a total budget of just 10 pounds.

High-flying Coleman jumper for auction

Australian Rules football champion John Coleman’s Essendon match jumper he wore in 1953 is one of the major highlights of Leonard Joel’s collectables auction from 2pm Thursday September 27 at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.

Coleman (1928-1973) was a Victorian Football League (now the Australian Football League) star full-forward, kicking 537 goals in only 98 matches.

Known for his high-flying spectacular marks, Coleman won two premierships with Essendon (1949 and 1950) and was VFL leading goal kicker five times (1949-1953).

Furniture items are highlighted by a mid-20th century style Space furniture desk (lot 680) purchased at the time for $15,000.

The 1960s and 1970s have not been forgotten in this auction with impressive teak sideboards (lots 815 and 823) on offer – along with a nests of teak tables (lot 793) and dining suites (lot 782).

Rare Australian tribal artefacts collection reaches auction market

As a boy in the 1950s on the family property in the southern Mallee region of Victoria, Daryl Blythman became fascinated with Australian indigenous artefacts that predated European migration by thousands of years.

“My passion for collecting began thanks to my father who collected stone artefacts and axes that dated back to the Aboriginal tribes who lived or travelled through this area,” he said.
