Pottery feast to bring out auction collectors

Items from the late Joe Dioguardi’s Ringwood estate join the contents of a Hawthorn mansion and two Kew homes and other private vendors in Amanda Addams Auctions latest sale from 6.30pm Monday June 2 at 344 High Street, Kew.

The auction contains a feast of ceramics and pottery from the 19th and 20th centuries including a rare bird decorated planter by Australian potter John Campbell.

Other makers to feature are Moorcroft, Royal Doulton, Doulton Lambeth, Royal Worcester, Wedgwood, Belleek, Cloisonné and Satsuma.

Practical steamboat set the new world in motion

 A live steam model of the “Charlotte Dundas” – the world’s first practical steamboat – is among items to be auctioned from noon on Sunday June 1 at Leonard Joel, 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.

The auction, entitled Classic Furniture, Objects and Collectables, comprises several single owner collections from different parts of Australia.

Built in the 1870s, the model (according to family history) is made from timber taken from the actual Charlotte Dundas after it was scrapped in 1861.

Avid model steam engine collector Greg Edwards is auctioning more of his collection through auctioneer Steve Graham from 10am tomorrow at 64 Urquhart Street, Woodend.

The sale includes a 1920s British Atkinson steam truck – a model so large Greg Edwards can sit on it.

Greg was only 13 when he began collecting model steam engines – and eventually built his stocks to more than 200, describing his collecting habits as “a bit of a disease”.

Interior designer collection to spark collector interest

Well-known Melbourne interior designer Stuart Rattle was found dead on December 9 last year when fire engulfed his South Yarra apartment.

Within days, his long-time partner Michael O’Neill was arrested for his murder and remanded in custody until a committal mention hearing later this month.

Mr Rattle owned Musk Farm near Daylesford, a property he bought in 1998 and was recognised for the landscaping he carried out.

The farm is now for sale and Mossgreen has been asked to auction the contents from noon on Sunday June 1.

Auction links to Camberwell's past

A strong link to Camberwell’s historic past will be among items to be auctioned from 9.30am Friday May 30 in Young’s Auctions special sale at 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn.

The link comprises items from and a painting of a late 19th century mansion on the corner of Riversdale and Trafalgar Roads – knocked down in the 1970s to build a hospital on the site.

The items include a leadlight window from the mansion and cast iron posts and lacework fencing.

Young’s Auctions latest sale on Friday May 23 at 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn features a set of 100-year-old vintage scales from Argentina owned by a well-travelled vendor.

There are several vintage cameras including a Roliflex, Zeiss Ikon and a Canon with multiple lenses, still in its original carry case.

There also is a washbowl by stoneware maker Mason’s, particularly popular last century, and the last of the vintage sewing machines and typewriters from the estate of European speedway motorcycle champion Romanian Emeric Somlo who migrated to Australia in 1965.

Ben Hollioake was well known for his lightning fast bowling and talent with the bat – even when he was only nine years old.

Little wonder that English captain Mike Atherton decided in 1997 to send Hollioake in as a pinch-hitter at No. 3 for his first one-day international match against the might of a top-class Australian attack that included fast bowler Glenn McGrath and legendary leg spinner Shane Warne.
