Good selection at Melbourne spring auction

Gibson’s Auctions kicks off its Spring Auction Series from 12pm Sunday November 29 with a Melbourne-based private collection of Chinese and Asian ceramics and works of art including a Han Dynasty green glazed pottery ‘hill’ jar and cover (lot 1) similar to one sold in September 2018 by Sotheby’s New York.

A Tang-style painted figure of horse (lot 2) is another highlight along with a Song Dynasty russet-splashed black glazed bowl (lot 3).

Brett Whiteley’s Henri’s Armchair 1974-75 – offered for sale for the first time since being purchased from the artist by the late Clive Evatt QC – could be the painting that smashes all previous Australian art records when it goes under the hammer as a single lot auction by Menzies at 7pm on November 26 in Sydney.

Carrying a catalogue estimate of $5 million to $7 million, the painting is set to eclipse the $5.4 million achieved 11 years ago for Sidney Nolan’s First-Class Marksman 1946 by Menzies when sold to prominent art dealer Roger McIlroy.

Richmond star Dustin Martin isn’t the only player to be voted best-on-ground in all three Australian Football League  grand final premierships (2017 and 2019-2020) in which he has featured.

These days, best-on-ground in a grand final is awarded the Norm Smith Medal – named after the legendary Melbourne coach who steered his team to several premierships during the 1950s and 1960s.

Before 1979, when the first Norm Smith Medal was awarded, the best player was just that without any concrete award acknowledgment.

Two important collections are among offerings at Melbourne-based Gibson’s Auctions forthcoming Australian, Maritime & Exploration online sale from 11am Sunday November 8 at 885-889 High Street, Armadale.

One is from keen maritime and nautical collector the late Bob Munro, who owned several CBD properties, and the other belongs to antiquarian bookseller Kay Craddock.

Bob’s auction collection is a reflection of his lifelong interest in antiques, maritime watercolours and oil paintings, ship model and beautiful objects.
