Unique model car collection and furniture a good auction mix

A unique collection of 150 to 200 new model cars, trucks and other vehicles is an unusual attraction for auction goers at E.J. Ainger’s forthcoming weekly sale from 9.30am Tuesday November 22 at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond.

The auction contains a solid selection of Georgian, Regency, Victorian, Edwardian and contemporary furniture.

Featured are mahogany and oak formal dining room tables and country refectory tables, along with chairs in cedar, blackwood and mahogany.

Jeffrey Smart painting to set auction scene alight

Jeffrey Smart’s Dividing Line, Study 1 from 1978-9 leads the auction charge at Mossgreen’s final multi-vendor Australian and International Art sale for 2016 from 6.30pm Monday November 21 at 36-40 Queen Street, Woollahra in Sydney.

This domestic sized work is as striking as it is memorable, according to Mossgreen’s chief executive officer Paul Sumner.

“Painted at the height of Smart’s powers, this is a near identical study for the image chosen to decorate the first edition of his memoir, ‘Not Quite Straight’”, he says in the auction catalogue introduction.

Sterling silver auction a must for collectors

A pair of museum quality George III regency covered tureens is the highlight of a significant collection of English sterling silver to be auctioned at Kim’s Auctions forthcoming sale from 11am Sunday November 20 at 327-329 Warrigal Road, Burwood.

The tureens, hallmarked London 1811 by Thomas Robbins, feature incised swirled decoration and applied heavy casting of a floral carouche surrounding a contemporary noble coat of arms supported on four feet complete with lion motifs.

A Greek Attic black-figure column krater or vase attributed to the Swing Painter and dating from about 530BC is an important highlight in the largest private collection of antiquities to be auctioned in Australia for many years.

The sale, conducted by Christian McCann Auctions, will be held on site from midday Sunday November 20 at 3 Illawarra Crescent, Toorak – the home of passionate lifetime collector Stewart Macciolli who purchased much of his collection through Sotheby’s and Christie’s in London.

The largest collection of furniture by Australia’s best known designer Grant Featherston (1922-1995) to ever be auctioned – a significant event for design enthusiasts, collectors and creative people – is part of the Leonard Joel Modern Design sale from 6.30pm Thursday November 10 at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra. 

Assembled by Melbourne architect Cameron Lyon, the venture began as a project to build an encyclopaedic collection of the designer’s works.

Photographic auction an eclectic lesson in history

Three hundred and sixty images and albums by many of the world’s best-known photographers from the 19th century and 20th century will be auctioned from 2pm Thursday November 10 at Leonard Joel 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.

The images belong to Dr Dinesh Parekh who has been collecting photographs for most of his adult life.

His interest in photography developed as a teenager growing up in Rajhisthan, India and he began collecting in earnest after qualifying in 1962 as a doctor.

Rare plantation chair in auction spotlight

A rare Australian cedar plantation chair purchased from the Chirnside family’s Mount Rothwell homestead and a rare Australian cedar sideboard are major highlights of E.J. Ainger’s forthcoming weekly auction from 9.30am Tuesday November 8 at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond.

In addition to owning the Mount Rothwell homestead, between 1874 and 1877 pastoralist brothers Thomas and Andrew Chirnside built the Italianate-style Werribee Park Mansion west of Melbourne and it became one of Victoria’s most famous landmarks.
