Sporting memorabilia a big auction hit

Cricket postcards from the turn of the 20th century and an original poster from cartoonist Weg of Footscray’s 1954 Victorian Football League win were the highlights of Mossgreen’s August sporting memorabilia auction.

The cards, published by Foster of Brighton from about 1900-1910 sold for $7930 (including buyers premium) on an estimate of $1200-$1500, while the Weg poster changed hands for $7320.

Other memorabilia to perform well included an 1888 South Melbourne football cap from the club’s days as a member of the Victorian Football Association ($5185), lifelong correspondence from Australian cricketing icon Sir Donald Bradman to Jock Livingston ($3416), and a cricket bat signed by Prince Charles and used by him during the July 4, 1971 match between RAF Cranwell and Lord’s Taverners ($2928).
