New record for Chinese furniture

A new Australian auction record for Chinese furniture was set on June 16 when Mossgreen sold a rare pair of Ming Dynasty Zitan hardwood chairs for $146,400 including Buyer’s Premium.

The market for Chinese furniture has been increasing significantly internationally and several high results have been achieved in Australia in the last few years.

This result smashes the previous record set at Mossgreen in 2011 for a pair of Huang-Huali throne chairs, which sold for $73,200.

Zitan wood is considered the pinnacle of rare Chinese timbers and is highly prized.  There were references published in the Mossgreen catalogue that compared them to virtually identical examples in well-known publications on Ming furniture.

Session 1 of The Autumn Auction Series made a total $1,324,480.80 (including Buyer’s Premium) against a low estimate of $918,300 (hammer price).
