Mossgreen's first car collectors auction achieves mixed results

Mossgreen’s first auction of Collectors Motor Cars & Automobilia at the Australian Motoring Festival on March 29 received a mixed response from the more than 250 bidders who attended – with many of the cars being passed in.

Designed to appeal to weekend motoring enthusiasts and discerning collectors, the auction realised $1.5 million.

However, much of that was the result of the high-end rare models being sold and the fact that Martin Burger’s highly prized collection of Michelin memorabilia all sold for almost $140,000.

Typical of the car sales was the 1966 Hertz Shelby GT 350-H Ford Mustang, which sold for $207,400 including buyer’s premium.

The catalogue cover lot, a ruby red 1959 Porsche 356A 1600 Super ‘Sunroof’ Coupe, changed hands for $134,200 (against a $100,000-$110,000 estimate) and the 1981 Ralt RT4 Cosworth (1981 Australian Grand Prix winning car) for $73,200.
