Jean Paul Gaultier designer bonnet charity auction

A Mercedes Benz SL-class bonnet carrying a typical Jean Paul Gaultier design and signed by the international designer sold for $11,500 at Sotheby’s Australia October 29 auction with all the money donated to Brainwave – an organisation supporting those affected by paediatric neurological conditions on children and their families.

Comprising 334 lots, the sale featured an impressive selection of European art, furniture, silver and bronze and rare pieces of Asian art.

The auction totalled $1.06 million including buyers premium – or 66 per cent by volume and 101 per cent by value.

An auction highlight was the handsome 1740s Italian Lacca Povera painted and parcel gilt bureau cabinet from Venice, selling for $67,100 on a $30,000-$40,000 estimate.

A striking mould-blown Pairpoint “Apple Tree” reverse painted glass and patinated metal table lamp sold for $36,600 and an octagonally lobed celadon jade bowl and cover headed a strong jade selection to change hands for $26,840.

The sale also featured 45 lots from Mr Darryl Farrelly, a discerning Melbourne collector and responsible for creating some of Melbourne’s most memorable window displays – including the iconic Myer Christmas windows – which all sold.
