Glove sofa achieves top auction price

A Poltronova Glove sofa, knocked down for $8000, was the highest furniture money earner at Leonard Joel’s Modern Design Furniture auction on April 23.

Other strong highlights were the Charles and Ray Eames lounge chair and ottoman, which went under the hammer for $7000, and a Poul Kjaerholm PKO chair for $6000.

The auction featured an international collection including designer pieces never offered on the Australian auction market and, while many of the pieces achieved prices better than their auction estimate, only 59 per cent of the items sold by volume.

Other good prices included $4200 for the Clement Meadmore Calyx floor lamp and $4000 for a Niels O. Moller design extension dining table.

Two Vico Magistretti Maralunga sofas brought $4000 each while an Alva Aalto auto trolley was knocked down for $2200.

The highest selling item was a Vespa Fender Light 125 scooter, reminiscent of the one that featured in the 1950s film Roman Holiday starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, which sold for $9750.
