Works by Australian artist the late David Boyd (1924-2011) featured prominently in Gibson’s Auctions October 14 Melbourne-based Australian and International Art sale with five of his paintings occupying the top six auction spots.
In first place was Boyd’s Reconciliation, 2001 (lot 73), changing hands for $21,960 including buyer’s premium, followed closely by his Discovering the Mystery of the Deep Blue Rose (lot 80) for $18,300.
Third and fourth places were filled with Storm Approaching, 2001 (lot 74), which sold for $14,640, and Black Spirit, 2001 (lot 75 - $12,200).
Keven (Pro) Hart (1928-2006) then got a look in with Picnic, 1993 (lot 78 - $11,590) before Boyd once more grabbed the limelight with Reconciliation Sacred Fire, 2001 (lot 77) with a $10,980 sale price.
Other paintings to occupy the top 10 listings included Hugh Sawrey’s (1919-1999) Fires of the Pintubi (lot 76) and Frederick McCubbin’s (1855-1917) Evening, South Yarra, circa 1907 (lot 101).
Places nine and 10 were occupied by Emily Kame Kngwarreye’s (circa 1910-1996) Merne Everything, 1993 (lot 107) and Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri’s (circa 1932-2002) Lightning Dreaming, 1999.
