A rare mid-17th century northern Italian rosewood, ivory and ebony cabinet on a 19th century stand (lot 387) is one of the strong antique furniture highlights at Philips Auctions forthcoming Decorative & Fine Arts sale from noon Sunday December 1 at 47 Glenferrie Road, Malvern.

The cabinet contains eight cedar lined drawers each with pen engraved ivory plaques depicting hunting, fishing, fowling and hawking scenes and in its centre is a Renaissance style cupboard with the drawers and the base inlaid with ivory neoclassical pictures.

Hungarian collection hits Australian auction market

The estate of a North Caulfield-based Jewish-Hungarian collector, who escaped Nazi German clutches during World War II then managed to migrate with her family to Australia before the Russian invasion of 1956, will be auctioned from noon on Sunday November 17 by Christian McCann Auctions.

The onsite sale, at 51 Rosemount Avenue North Caulfield, features the rare and untouched collection of the late Agi Gold – who returned to Budapest following the Holocaust and liberation, only to have to flee once more when Russian occupation of the country was imminent.

Gibson’s Auctions Spring Auction Series has delved deep into English history with its offering of a Reformation work by Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680), leading portrait artist to the English court of his day.

Carrying a catalogue estimate of $15,000-$25,000, the painting (lot 119) is part of the auction house sale that begins on 10.30am Monday November 11 at 885-889 High Street, Armadale.

Painted about 1660, the subject matter is Margaret Waller (1627-1694), eldest child of English Parliamentary general during the 1642-45 English Civil War Sir William Waller (1597-1668).
