Alan Boxer collection brings new indigenous art records

Sale of the Alan Boxer Collection of Indigenous Art in mid-March by Mossgreen resulted in 13 new auction records for the artists involved from a packed and enthusiastic saleroom of bidders.

The sale realised $1,041,380 (190 per cent sold by value and 100 per cent by lot) and artists such as Jeremiah Bonson, Tiger Palpatja, Johnny Mosquito and Harry Tjutjuna were among the record creators.

Mossgreen’s head of Australian and indigenous art D’lan Davidson believes the Australian indigenous art market has turned the corner.

“Over the past 18 months, we have witnessed a rising demand for works of art that have impeccable provenance, are well researched and are aesthetically beautiful – all of which are qualities that the Alan Boxer Collection possessed,” he said.

Top prices included Fruit of the Vine by Emily Kame Kngwarreye, which sold for $103,700, Untitled (Barramundi Dreaming) by Rover Thomas ($67,100 against a $30,000-$50,000 estimate) and the cover lot, Wanampi Tjukurpa by Tiger Palpatja ($24,400, estimate $8,000-$12,000).
