18th century Italian gilt bureau a great auction result

A 1740s Italian Lacca Povera painted and parcel gilt bureau from Venice was the focus of intense bidding at Sotheby’s Australia October 29 Fine Asian, Australian and European Arts & Design auction – changing hands for an outstanding $67,100 including buyers premium.

The auction totalled $1.06 million – 66 per cent volume and 101 per cent by value.

A striking mould-blown Pairpoint ‘Apple Tree’ reverse painted glass and patinated metal table lamp achieved $24,400 (estimate $20,000-30,000, lot 81). This exceptional example of art and design from the Art Nouveau period presented a rare opportunity for bidders to acquire a fine example of the Pairpoint  Corporation’s most popular creation.

Amongst the Asian Art featured in the sale, a gilt bronze figure of Buddha, generated strong interestfrom international bidders selling for $36,600 (estimate $25,000-35,000, lot 207).

The sale includeda strong selection of jade and an octagonally lobed celadon jade bowl and cover sold to a room bidder for $26,840 (estimate $15,000-25,000, lot 194). Well exceeding the estimates of $4,000-6,000, a pairof zitan stands, Qing dynasty realised $20,740 (lot 242).

The sale featured 45 lots from the property of Mr Darryl Farrelly, a discerning Melbourne collector responsible for creating some of Melbourne’s most memorable window displays, including the iconic Myer Christmas Windows. Highly contested, all lots from this collection sold. A 19th century Flemish cabinet, comprised of tortoiseshell, bone and ebony was popular with bidders, achieving a sale result of $19,520 (estimate $5,000-8,000, lot 44).
