Famous Kingsford Smith postcard depicts Sydney Harbour Bridge opening
A postcard depicting the Sydney Harbour Bridge under construction will be a major highlight of Mossgreen’s stamps, coins and postal history auction from 2.30pm Wednesday June 25 at 926-930 High Street, Armadale.
To commemorate the opening of the bridge on March 19, 1932, Australian pioneer aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith flew a party of senior engineers responsible for its construction over the bridge on the day.
Signed by the pilot and his 14 passengers, the card was carried in the “Southern Cross” plane and cancelled at the special Bridge Post Office.

The Hoong Loh collection will be part of Lawson Menzies Sydney quarterly fine art auction from 6.30pm Thursday June 19 at Menzies Gallery, 12 Todman Avenue, Kensington.
Migrating from Malaysia in 1982 to study at Monash University, Hoong was initially drawn to paintings of the Max Meldrum and George Bell schools.
Hoong secured employment in the public service and by the late 1980s set about acquiring abstract expressionist works by Judy Cassab and John Coburn.

An impressive sculpture of famous German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) by noted French sculptor Emile Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) will be a major highlight of Leonard Joel’s fine art auction from 6.30pm Tuesday June 17 at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.
Bourdelle was well known for his works – making about 80 sculptures from 1888 until his death, with Beethoven’s figure featuring quite prominently.

A rare 1860s southern Chinese lacquered wood palanquin acquired several years ago from an old Tasmanian collection will be a major highlight of Philips Auctions forthcoming sale from noon Sunday June 15 at 47 Glenferrie Road, Malvern.
Palanquins were mainly used for transporting members of the aristocracy, protecting them from dust and dirt and hot and cold weather during their travels.
