The late Ray Crooke to be tested at auction

Three (including one large) paintings by Australian artist the late Ray Crooke will feature in Christian McCann’s first auction for 2016 from noon February 21 at 426 Burnley Street, Richmond.

One of Australia’s leading landscape artists, famous particularly for his serene views of Islander people and ocean landscapes based on the art of Paul Gauguin, Crooke died in December last year aged 93.

Although not usually recognised for his portraits, he won the 1969 Archibald Prize with a painting of novelist George Johnston.

This country estate and garden – Wynchelm at 10 The Crescent – has been intricately planned and developed over the past 50 years by the Fletcher family – and is now recognised as one of the finest homes and gardens ever created in the Dandenong Ranges.

The centrepiece attraction is a three-tiered lake complete with Parisian walking bridge traversing it.

French Sevres collection unlikely to be seen again at auction

A world-class collection of 19th century French Sevres leads the charge atChristian McCann Auctions forthcoming sale from noon Sunday September 27 at 426 Burnley Street, Richmond.

The Sevres collection, comprising 40 mainly ormolu mounted Celeste and Cobalt blue pieces, is unlikely to be matched in the foreseeable future.

The Sevres collection is supported by European and English porcelain, including Royal Worcester, Dresden vases and figures and rare porcelain clocks.

McCann forced to move his on site Toorak auction

Christian McCann’s on site sale last month of the contents of the nearby property “Moonya” so impressed the owner of 15 Linlithgow Street, Toorak she was prompted to contact him to perform a similar auction at her house.

“It was only a quick settlement of the sale of the house that prevented the auction going ahead in her home,” he said.

So now the sale is being held from noon Sunday August 23 in Christian McCann Auctions room at 426 Burnley Street, Richmond.

Furnishings from the historic Essendon mansion Rosebank will be part of Christian McCann Auctions forthcoming sale from noon on Sunday June 14 at 426 Burnley Street, Richmond.

Originally built in 1892 by Melbourne pioneer entrepreneur Thomas Napier, the mansion – complete with iron lacework return verandahs, balconies and sweeping central staircase – is a well-known local landmark and was a convent for many years before being recently restored to its former glory.
