Jewellery auction a showcase for classics
An antique Victorian locket featuring a classic bird and nest design from Harry Emanuel in London and still in its original fitted box is a highlight of Leonard Joel’s jewellery auction from 6.30 Monday March 24 at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.
The auction is in two parts with the second segment continuing at 10.30am on Thursday March 26.
Other features include an antique diamond locket and chain, a tourmaline and diamond necklace and a loose pink diamond weighing almost half a carat and with a catalogue estimate of $125,000-$150,000.

Russian silver an auction drawcard
Among Philips Auctions latest decorative arts sale (from noon tomorrow at 47 Glenferrie Road, Malvern) are two collections – one, 19th century milk glassware and small “end of day” vases by various well-known glassmakers, the other Russian and English silver dating from the 17th century.
The glassware belonged to solicitor the late Robert McCracken, whose ancestors, brothers Robert and Peter, migrated from Scotland in 1841 and established a brewery that was eventually taken over by Carlton United.

Royal Doulton character jugs to bring auction goers running
This week, Young’s Auctions has a massive collection of more than 150 Royal Doulton character jugs occupying several cabinets as its main auction feature from 9.30am Friday at 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn.
The jugs, from a deceased estate and collected over 30 years, include graphic faces of pirates, masked bandits and young maidens and should be enormously popular among auction goers, who have already had a taste of what was to come in the past couple of weeks.

Menzies Art Brands was so enamoured with the results of its October auction last year (when it set a new artist auction record of almost $4 million for Brett Whiteley’s The Armchair) that it is predicting a very positive outcome for its first 2014 sale – from 6.30pm Thursday at 1 Darling Street, South Yarra.
Art specialist Tim Abdallah believes when records are set (particularly for Brett Whiteley paintings) confidence is returning to the market.

Out with the old in with the new - street art becomes the latest craze
Sandra Powell and Andrew King are no strangers to collecting art. She from a fashion background, he financial, the husband and wife team started collecting works by some of Australia’s leading artists in the early 1990s – all the while building a wholesale importing business supplying clothes to the Australian teenage market.
Sandra sourced iconic modernists such as Sidney Nolan and Joy Hester, while Andrew preferred the likes of Clarice Beckett.
Then about seven years ago, they began to focus on a very different genre – street art.

Auction for collector a sign of things to come
Greg Edwards started collecting model steam engines when he was only 13 years old – now he has more than 200, one no bigger than the size of his thumb.
“The largest – a 1920s British Atkinson steam truck – I can sit on,” he explained. “The thumb size model is a miniature oscillating steam engine.”

Hume family home contents an auction drawcard
The house at 49-51 Streeton Crescent, East Ivanhoe was built originally for a member of the Hume family – direct descendants of the explorer Hamilton Hume who around 1824 opened up much of southern New South Wales and Victoria and lends his name to the Hume Highway.
The vendors, who still have the original architect drawings, have asked Christian McCann Auctions to sell the contents on site from midday Sunday March 16.
The auction will comprise the finest quality French, English and Chinese antiques and objet d’art, and Australian art.

Character jugs continue to attract auction goers
Royal Doulton character jugs continue to occupy the glass cabinets of Young’s Auctions saleroom prior to next week’s special sale when some 200 are expected to go under the hammer in a major special sale for the auction house.
The auction will be held from 9.30am on Friday at 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn.
Antique furniture is another feature – an inlaid leather desk a promising drawcard – and estate jewellery always proves a big attraction.

Royal Doulton jugs, plates and figures to be auctioned over several weeks
The first of a comprehensive collection of Royal Doulton character jugs, plates and figures will be among items to be auctioned from 9.30am Friday at Young’s Auctions 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn.
This vast collection will be auctioned over several weeks to avoid over-burdening the market and devaluing the items involved.
The auction also contains a large collection of Danish retro furniture – including chests, sideboards and leather lounges – and a wide range of traditional landscape art, in particular a New Zealand painting of a young girl standing by a river.
