Featuring one of the first specimens of silver gilt lining in the Tasmanian colony, the box was made by former convict turned silversmith and medallist in Hobart, Charles Jones, and presented by William Gore Elliston to John Mezger during a special dinner at Mezger’s Hotel in August 1848.

Military aircraft books an auction bonanza

Former Ansett Airlines pilot, the late Paul Gray, was a mad collector of mainly military aircraft books – which he assembled over a lifetime.

The books, in all some 2500 volumes, have been stored for the past 19 years and will be auctioned from 9.30am Friday June 19 at Young’s Auctions weekly sale at 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn.

Paul Gray died several years ago and auctioneer David Young said the collection would be broken into 120 lots for the sale.

Martin Brothers pottery an auction steal

A collection of Martin Brothers pottery should bring collectors running to Mossgreen’s ceramics section of its Autumn Auction Series from 10.30am Wednesday June 17 at 926-930 High Street, Armadale.

Located in Middlesex, England, Martin Brothers was famous for making Martinware – a salt-glazed stoneware – between 1873 and 1915.

Many figural jugs and vases were created by the three brothers and of special interest were the fanciful birds, usually made with removable heads and called “Wally Birds”.
