Collectors chance to obtain rare first edition parliamentary books
More than 230 rare leather-bound first editions from Victorian and earlier times belonging to the Parliamentary Library of NSW are part of an online timed auction by Lawsons Auctioneers, which ends at 10am on Friday November 14.
The NSW Parliamentary Library, founded in 1840 as the Library of the Legislative Council of New South Wales, is Australia’s oldest continuously operating official research library.

An exquisite blue Lalique Piriac vase with frosted glass and rippled band is a major highlight of E.J. Ainger’s special sale from 11am Sunday November 9 at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond.
The same collector also has a splendid silver collection in the auction including items from renowned silver maker Nathaniel Mills – which matches well with other silver in the sale including a German 875 silver canteen of cutlery.

In a first for Woodend auction goers, auctioneer Steve Graham is offering a magnificent polar bear rug to accompany a stag’s head, turtles and reindeer pelts at his forthcoming sale from 10am Sunday November 9 at 64 Urquhart Street, Woodend.
The auction features an extensive range of model railway locomotives, carriages, scenery and tracks – some of it on display in the 1960s and 1970s at Parliament House in Canberra.

Rare bird volumes auction vital for collectors
A rare set of six original Gracius J. Broinowski books entitled The Birds of Australia, dated 1890 and belonging to well-known Melbourne bird enthusiast the late Barbara Tunbridge, will be a major drawcard at Christian McCann’s forthcoming auction from noon Saturday November 9 at 426 Burnley Street, Richmond.
A recognised artist and leading ornithologist of his day, Broinowski was born in 1837 in Poland and 20 years later arrived at Portland, Victoria after swimming ashore from a windjammer following a trying journey from England.

Melbourne Cup auction to bring in racing fanatics
In the midst of this year’s Spring Racing Carnival, Mossgreen is holding its Melbourne Cup Auction, which, while it offers other sporting items, concentrates largely on horse racing memorabilia.
Given she remained unbeaten in all of her 23 starts, it is probably fitting that a painting of Black Caviar by Brett Jarrett is included among the auction items.
The auction will begin at 10am on Friday November 7 at 926-930 High Street, Armadale.

Heritage listed historic Ballarat home “Clowance” at 518 Barkly Street will be the venue for Glenelg Auctions sale of superb antiques and art from 11am Sunday November 2.
Built in 1892-3 for then Ballarat mayor and goldmine owner Isaiah Pearce and owned until recently sold by Dr Michael Stubbs, the home is historically significant because it is an innovative example of a transitional design between Victorian and Federation styles.

Fine china dinner sets for the more discerning auction goers
Auction goers looking to stock up on fine china dinner sets will find it difficult to go past the Wedgwood and Royal Doulton on offer at Young’s Auctions latest sale from 9.30am Friday October 31 at 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn.
There are several dinner sets to be auctioned along with other Wedgwood and Royal Albert tea set items.
One of the more unusual exhibits is a pair of stuffed cobras fighting a mongoose, while the collection of wines and ports should appeal to wine collectors.

Darryl Farrelly was one of Melbourne’s premiere window dressers and famous for some of Myer’s most memorable windows.
With the festive season around the corner and the Myer Christmas windows in their final stages of preparation, it is perhaps fitting that his arts and design collection will be part of Sotheby’s Australia forthcoming Fine Asian Australian & European Design auction from 5.30pm Wednesday October 29 at Level 2, 41 Exhibition Street, Melbourne.
