Clifford Possum paintings auction for Aboriginal art lovers

Two Clifford Possum paintings entitled Man’s Dreaming and Lizard Dreaming should attract Aboriginal art lovers to E.J. Ainger’s forthcoming weekly sale from 9.30am at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond.

The artworks, each with catalogue estimates of $3000-$5000, are among a selection of paintings and graphics in the auction bound to interest auction goers.

There is a range of collectables and items of interest including Lladro, crystal and ruby glass, and Dresden porcelain.

Reverend Henry Moulle (1801-1880) invented the dry earth compost toilet or closet following London’s “Great Stink” of 1858, when a defunct sewer system led to several cholera outbreaks.

Two significant estates are part of Leonard Joel’s forthcoming Jewels & Objets D’Art auction from 6pm Monday June 27 at the NCJWA Hall, 11 Queen Street, Woollahra in Sydney.

One of the estates belonged to Hungarian-born Vera Salgo who spent her time residing in both Australia and Monaco.

Well travelled, it took her many years attending auction houses and haunting dealer premises to amass her collection, which features mainly decorative arts that incorporates a European (mainly Hungarian) art component – an interesting and curious mixture of portraits and landscapes.

An Egyptian limestone carved figure of a human Pharaoh headed sphinx from the Ptolemaic period 300BC-30BC join several other Egyptian antiquities at Kim’s Auctions forthcoming sale from 11am Sunday June 26 at 327-329 Warrigal Road, Burwood.

The other antiquities include two faience amulets and one faience New Year’s pilgrim flask from the late to Ptolemaic period 600-BC-300BC and two Greek silver tetradrachms of Alexander the Great 336BC-323BC.

The amulets depict Ureus the Royal Cobra and the god Isis with baby horns.

Toorak mansion gives up its auction treasures

Furniture and collectables from one of Melbourne’s most prestigious Toorak mansions will be auctioned on site at 159 Kooyong Road from noon Sunday June 26 by Christian McCann Auctions.

Sergeant Major Tivey built Nauroy at the beginning of the 20th century after returning from the Boer War and when he died his daughter turned the home into a boarding house.

Boarding house guests included members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Five paintings by Australian artist Pro Hart – including one purchased directly from “The Australian Bush Series” exhibition in October 1975 in Hong Kong – are a key component of Glenelg Auctions two-day auction from 11am Saturday June 25 and Sunday June 26 at 109 Learmonth Street, Portland.

The exhibition painting, entitled The Mallee Races, is an oil on board signed by the artist and comes complete with certificate of authenticity.

Other Pro Hart paintings in the sale include The Rabbit Trappers and Street Scene, Double Bay NSW.

The collectables include sterling silver, jewellery, china and crystal items – much of it from estates and private consignments in Kew, Balwyn, Hawthorn, Glen Iris and Toorak.

The auction contains a large consignment of paintings and items of interest stored for many years and a range of Victorian, Edwardian and 1920s furniture.

1924 Bentley leads the charge at classic car auction

A 1924 Bentley 3-litre Vanden Plas ‘Le Mans’ style tourer will be the most expensive attraction at Mossgreen’s forthcoming Collectors’ Cars, Motorcycles and Automobilia auction from 3pm Sunday June 19 at 935 High Street, Armadale.

The car, which carries a catalogue estimate of $270,000-$300,000, was built between 1994 and 1999 for Geoff Venn by Rod Warrener and the engine – a genuine 1924 3-litre number AP325 – assembled during the 1980s by Jim Duncan.

The new chassis was made by Julian Ghosh and the rest of the parts are original.
