Quilting auction a soft touch

Quilting clubs and societies stand to gain from auctioneer Steve Graham’s forthcoming auction of quilting materials and accessories from a deceased estate from 10am Sunday at 64 Urquhart Street, Woodend.

The woman, who died recently, was a quilting teacher and her collection includes sewing machines, sewing tables, overlockers, wool spinner wheels and other equipment, along with patterns, books and magazines on the subject.

Lost Buckmaster self-portrait a lucky auction find

A 1960 self-portrait of Australian artist Ernest Buckmaster has been discovered as the backing for another of his paintings earmarked for auction at E.J. Ainger’s two-day special sale from 11am Saturday May 21 and Sunday May 22 at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond.

Discovered by the restorer who was busy cleaning the auction painting for Aingers (a seascape of Mentone – where Buckmaster lived during the 1930s and 1940s), the self-portrait has been fitted to a canvas, mounted in a beautiful period frame and also will be part of the sale.

Born in Hong Kong in 1927 and educated in Melbourne, Boxer completed Economics degrees at both Melbourne and Oxford universities.

He became an Academy of Science fellow, was a University of Melbourne academic, Economics Record editor and the author of books on foreign aid, tax reforms and the Australian economy.

Ironically, the Leonard Joel’s sale takes place only a few blocks from where the trophy (won by colonial pioneer Alexander McLean Hunter’s horse Benedict) was originally presented – the former Prahran Course located in the precinct between what is now Toorak Road and Fawkner Park in Melbourne’s South Yarra.

Phar Lap program collection auction for serious collectors

Although he won his last race 85 years ago before dying tragically from suspected poisoning, Phar Lap is still regarded as the most famous racehorse in Australian history.

Now, a unique collection of racing programs portraying much of Phar Lap’s racing career, will be auctioned from 9.30am Tuesday May 10 by Mossgreen at 926-930 High Street, Armadale.

The collection belongs to Californian Gary Madeiros who grew up near Menlo Park, where Phar Lap died, and was always fascinated by his story.
