Many Australian TV followers will remember Gavan Disney as executive producer and the brains behind the creation of Channel 9’s long running variety show Hey Hey Its Saturday hosted by Daryl Sommers.

He also was the co-creator of Network Ten’s lifestyle program Healthy, Wealthy and Wise and veteran TV personality Bert Newton claims Disney resurrected his career when he offered him the host spot on Good Morning Australia.

1930 Australian penny part of rare auction coin set

An Australian 1930 penny with an estimated worth of $19,000 is among a collection of album mounted pennies dating from 1911-1964 (lot 18) to be offered as part of Leski Auctions Stamps, Coins & Postal History auction from noon Sunday December 16 at 727-729 High Street, Armadale.

Managing director Charles Leski says while 1930 pennies in any condition are extremely rare, it is even more unusual to see them as part of a large collection like the one for sale.

Romance has always surrounded the 1930 penny, which was never intended to be placed in circulation.

Famous French cabinetmakers are auction drawcards

A Francoise Linke (1855-1946) commode and a bureau-plat by Paul Sormani are highlights of Christian McCann Auctions final sale for 2018 from noon Sunday December 16 at 426 Burnley Street, Richmond.

A leading late 19th and early 20th century Parisian cabinetmaker, Linke was born in the small Czech Republic village of Pankraz and in 1875 arrived in Paris.

Six years later, he was supplying for more established furniture makers and, in a time of wealth and confidence in France, set his sights on exhibiting his creations at the 1900 Paris World Fair.

One of the more colourful items is a circa 1705 Edo Period Japanese four panel screen in the Kano Tomonobu school style and painted by its esteemed artist Fujiwara Toshinobu at 70 years old (lot 13).

Kano Tomonobu was the sixth generation descendant of the master Kano Eitoku who established the Kano tradition of crane paintings.

A lifetime of collecting leads to a special auction

When the late Neil Robertson was 12 years old he purchased his first antique – a decision that was to start him on a lifetime of collecting, particularly curios.

After completing high school, he worked in Australia and England as a bookseller before becoming the proprietor of Melbourne’s iconic Webber’s Booksellers, opened in 1931 by Margareta Webber.

His other interest was gardening – and to that end in 1988 he became involved in Australia’s Open Garden Scheme and served as its national executive officer for almost 20 years.

A giant pair of marble lions is the striking feature of E.J. Ainger’s forthcoming “architectural and art deco almost single vendor” auction, according to managing director John Ainger.

“The lions were part of a Templestowe mansion belonging to a well-known Melbourne business identity that he tore down 10 years ago and have been stored ever since in a Bentleigh warehouse,” he said.

The lions (each of which weighs about two tonnes) are not the only massive architectural feature at the auction, which will be held from 11am Sunday December 2 at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond.
