Melbourne's historic Australian auction a journey of remembrance
A unique Australian coat of arms made in wool about 1880 by William Duncan from the outback Queensland town of Charters Towers (lot 132) is typical of the historic flavour of Leski Auctions forthcoming Australian & Colonial sale from 12pm Sunday may 26 at 727-729 High Street, Armadale.
The shield’s four quadrants (bale of wheat, merino sheep, three-masted sailing ship and gold minehead) are surrounded by Australian birds siting amongst a Scottish thistle, English rose and Irish shamrock with kangaroo and emu supporting two white ensigns.

Australian turf legend Phar Lap is again in the headlines with the auction of a collection of his memorabilia through Abacus Auctions latest Melbourne sporting memorabilia sale from 11am Sunday May 19 at 19A Hampshire Road, Glen Waverley.
The Phar Lap auction collection, comprising 56 lots, belongs to avid stamp, antique toy and horse racing collector Dario Dicarla – who was kicked out of school aged 15 when he was caught at the TAB.

Melbourne jewellery auction to aid Perth charity
Ninety-two-year-old Perth widow Ruth Foreman has decided to auction more than 100 pieces of jewellery – most left by her jeweller father – and donate the proceeds to a women’s charity in Western Australia.
Her main reason for doing so is that she has no children to leave the pieces to and would like them to be of public benefit.
The jewellery collection will be sold through Philips Auctions jewellery auction from 6pm Monday May 6 at 47 Glenferrie Road, Malvern.

Auction goers will be confronted by an absolute feast of sterling silver at Philips Auctions forthcoming Fine and Decorative Arts sale from 12pm Sunday May 5 at 47 Glenferrie Road, Malvern.
Leading the goodies is an extensive collection of English Victorian Vesta match cases (where matches are stored and can be lit by striking on the bottom of the case), collected in the 1940s and 1950s by one family who documented from where each piece came.

The 2018 closing of the Joshua McClelland Print Room and the family-associated Rathdowne Galleries in Carlton is the end of an important era in Melbourne’s and Australia’s art market.
Leski Auctions has been asked to auction the paintings, prints, porcelain and furniture from 12pm Sunday May 5 at 727-729 High Street, Armadale – bringing to a close a Melbourne icon that was established in 1927 by Joshua McClelland when he set up an antiques business in his own name.

There are a few knickknacks that could well interest auction goers including a very collectable ivory peacock and Chinese terracotta figure.
Among the porcelain and glassware on offer is a Moorcroft floral decorated lidded bowl and an unusual Lalique circular bowl.

Renaissance silver cup an auction reminder of Tasmanian governor
In 1868, the British Conservative Party MP for North Essex Sir Charles Du Cane was appointed the third Governor of Tasmania – a position he held until November 30, 1874.
Before he left England, his constituents and friends presented Sir Charles with a Renaissance silver cup which will be among items to be auctioned from noon Sunday April 28 by Christian McCann Auctions at 429 Burnley Street, Richmond.
The lid is embossed with the goddess Diana, her dog and hunting scenes while the lower section features a satyr seated on a rocky mound.

"Aussie Earl" tosses fittings in multi-million dollar mansion refit
Melbourne’s leading royalty, 82-year-old “Aussie Earl” Englishman Keith Rous – the sixth Earl of Stradbroke – and his wife of 42 years, Rosie, never do anything by halves.
They are about to carry out a multi-million dollar renovation to dramatically enlarge and modernise the massive Hawthorn mansion “Haven”, built in 1898 and with its twin towers one of the original landmark properties of St James Park Estate, that they bought almost three years ago – and are ditching many of the property fittings to do so.
