Toy auction offers collectors rare items
A rare promotional French Dinky 560-P Citroen 2CV van carrying the Philips moniker will be among the major highlights of Leonard Joel’s next toy auction from 12pm Thursday April 16 at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.
The van, carrying a catalogue estimate of $1500-$3000, is among 105 collectable items up for grabs.
Most of the toys carry catalogue estimates from $100 to several hundred dollars and include such interesting items as a French clockwork scooter and tri-porteur with white suited rider and a Vilmer Volvo KFK fodder bus.

Christopher Columbus flagship a maritime auction bonus
A model of Christopher Columbus’s flagship, the Santa Maria, should bring maritime buffs running to E.J. Ainger’s next auction from 9.30am Tuesday April 14 at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond.
The Santa Maria, probably a medium sized nao (carrack), was the largest of the three vessels Columbus used in 1492 during his first exploratory voyage to the Americas.
The other expedition vessels were the smaller caravel-type ships La Nina (The Girl) and La Pinta (The Painted One).

Extraordinary collection a family affair
Keen collectors of art and other collectables, Dr Peter Brew and his wife Monica lived at 1269 High Street, Malvern for almost six decades.
They bought the turn of the 20th century house in 1959 and in it raised seven children. To some degree, Peter Brew followed in the collecting footsteps of his prominent ophthalmologist grandfather, Dr George Alexander Brew, who, among other items, obtained several prominent pieces that once belonged to Lord Kitchener and notes from Captain Cook’s diary.
