Stamp and postal history collectors will no doubt wait with mouth-watering anticipation for Mossgreen’s forthcoming Stamps and Postal History of New South Wales auction from 6pm Monday April 20 at Martyn Cook Galleries 98 Barcom Avenue, Rushcutters Bay in Sydney.

Writing in the catalogue introduction, Mossgreen specialist Gary Watson claims the 100 lots of Sydney Views stamps are among the highest quality selections ever offered at auction.

Affordable auction art for those looking to enter the market

Buyers looking to enter the art market at an affordable level could do worse than attend Mossgreen’s Sunday Art Emporium auction from 2pm Sunday April 12 at 926-930 High Street, Armadale.

Many of the works on offer – featuring small oils, watercolours, lithographs and screen prints by well-known Australian and overseas artists – carry catalogue estimates of only a few hundred dollars and are priced to sell.

This is the first of three lower priced Mossgreen art sales for the year, being held to encourage and expand collector interest in art.

First collectors car auction for Mossgreen

Mossgreen will hold its first Collectors’ Cars & Automobilia auction as part of The Australian Motoring Festival – a joint initiative between the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce and the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria from Thursday March 26 to Sunday March 29 at Melbourne Showgrounds.

The auction, from 3pm on Sunday, will feature a range of iconic vehicles, including several E-Type Jaguars and the 1981 RALT RTH Cosworth Australian Grand Prix winning car – and Martin Burger’s incredible collection of Michelin memorabilia.

Landmark Australian artist's studio works go to auction

A landmark Australian artist, Elizabeth Durack was born 100 years ago this year and died in 2000. 

She was born into one of the pastoral families that opened up the Kimberley region of Western Australia during the 19th century – and was heavily influenced in her artistic development by Aboriginal cave paintings she saw as a girl and by the rituals and ceremonies of the oldest culture on earth.

Despite attending Loreto Convent and studying art at Chelsea Polytechnic in London in 1936, these influences never left her.

Economist and leading art collector auction swansong

An inveterate art collector, Alan Boxer was better known as an economist who, from 1975 as a senior Department of Treasury member, helped shape Australia’s economic future.

Born in Hong Kong in 1927 and educated in Melbourne, Boxer completed Economics degrees at both Melbourne and Oxford universities.

He became an Academy of Science fellow, was a University of Melbourne academic, Economics Record editor and the author of books on foreign aid, tax reforms and the Australian economy.

Australiana collectors and dealers were well aware of the contribution made to the Australian collecting scene by the late husband and wife team Carl Gonsalves and Caressa Crouch.

During her tenure as secretary of the Australian Society, membership almost doubled.

Meeting as teenagers and together almost 40 years, the two were regulars at antique shops, markets, auctions and fairs for over 30 years.

Baggy greens aplenty in Mossgreen sporting auction

Given the massive interest in the recent Test series against India and the forthcoming World Cup, a collection of Australian Test “baggy green” caps will be major drawcards for auction goers at Mossgreen’s first auction for the year from 10am on Tuesday February 3 at 926-930 High Street, Armadale.

The baggy green caps belong to Sam Loxton, a member of Don Bradman’s 1948 “Invincibles” team that vanquished England, Terry Jenner and John Maclean.

A collection of stamps and postal history on annotated exhibition pages – awarded a silver medal at the 2013 Tel Aviv Multinational Stamp Exhibition – should bring philatelists running at Mossgreen’s forthcoming Stamps, Coins and Postal History auction from 1pm Tuesday December 9 at 126-130 High Street, Armadale.

The collection contains 64 complete exhibition sheets and covers stamps and covers issued during 1918, Jerusalem I, II and III stamps and Somerset House and Waterlow printings issued to the end of 1921 – and carries a catalogue estimate of $20,000-$25,000.

Beatles memorabilia for enthusiastic fans

Beatles fans will be keen to climb all over Mossgreen’s two-day Quarterly Collectors auction from noon Tuesday December 2 and Wednesday December 3 when more than 100 of the iconic pop group’s memorabilia items will be up for grabs.

Beatles memorabilia will not be offered until day two and the most valuable item (estimate $5000-$7500) is a Denny Hoffman photograph of all four band members signed by each Beatle.

However, there are plenty of affordable items with estimates in the low hundreds and Mossgreen is expecting an enthusiastic turnout.

Paul Newman watch and Patti Mostyn jewellery collection an auction highlight

A rare Paul Newman Rolex Daytona Cosmograph wristwatch is the highlight of Mossgreen’s Fine Jewels and Watches auction from 6pm Monday November 17 at 126-130 High Street, Armadale.

The auction also features a selection of jewellery from international publicist Patti Mostyn, who represented many of the biggest names in the music and entertainment industries.

The Paul Newman Rolex is the Holy Grail for many horological enthusiasts and is one of the world’s most sought after timepieces.
