Weekly auctions return after successful special sale

Consignments from estates and private homes have built up at E.J. Ainger’s storage warehouse because the company has not held its regular weekly auction for four weeks due to the highly successful special sale of April 6.

The next weekly sale will be from 9.30am Tuesday April 15 at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond and will feature 19th century and 20th century English, French, Australian, Egyptian and decorative furnishings.

Famous Collingwood coach has collectibles for auction

Items belonging to the legendary Collingwood player and coach Jock McHale will be a highlight of E.J. Ainger’s special sale from noon Sunday April 6 at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond.

Born in Sydney, McHale moved to Melbourne as a child where he attended the Christian Brothers College in East Melbourne before leaving school to work at the nearby McCracken Brewery (later bought out by Carlton United Breweries).

At the same time, he joined Australian Rules football club Coburg, where he immediately impressed and was spotted by Collingwood.

E.J. Ainger’s latest auction, from 9.30am Tuesday at 433 Bridge Road Richmond, will feature decorative French furnishings from a home in Orrong Road, Toorak and a large consignment of teak retro furniture.

The auction also contains English 20th century furniture, ceiling lights, genuine Persian rugs, paintings and graphics, marble and grandfather clocks and taxidermy items.

An auction that is heaven for restorers

Restorers and the home handyman (or woman) will be in their element fossicking among E.J. Ainger’s restoration gems from 9.30am on Tuesday at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond.

The auction house’s back room is full of restoration and decorator items while the front room contains Victorian and Australian 19th century furniture.

This includes a fine secretaire two-door bookcase, burr walnut wardrobe, credenza and a music canterbury.

There also is a large number of interesting collectable including paintings and floor rugs.

Auction rooms benefit from holiday break

E.J. Ainger opened its auction rooms on Tuesday after being closed for more than a month for the Christmas-New Year holiday break.

However, staff did not depart for the break without leaving the carrier’s number on the office answering machine and were surprised to find they were inundated with antique and luxurious furnishings and collectibles on their return.

All these items will be available for Aingers Tuesday auction from 9.30am at 433 Bridge Road, Richmond.

Conroy collection to go under the hammer

David Conroy was studying surgery in London more than 50 years ago when he first met the much older antiques expert and dealer Bill Johnston.

He and his wife Judith had only recently married and had not long arrived in England to further his medical studies.

During their four years in England they became firm friends and Bill Johnston was able to advise and mould what was to become a lifelong interest in antiques and collectibles.
