Norman Lindsay tableau on market after 40 years

Norman Lindsay’s striking tableau Race of the Centaurs has re-emerged after 40 years in a private Sydney collection and is a major feature of Leonard Joel’s final fine art auction for the year from 6.30pm Tuesday at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.

Another major attraction is James Gleeson’s Landscape with Self-Portrait in Parenthesis 1994, originally acquired from Watters Gallery in Sydney. 

Auction goers also will be impressed with Gray Smith’s charming Outback Home with Figure 1958, formerly in the collection of Heide Museum of Art founders John and Sunday Reed, along with Black Friday 1939 by mid-century artist Grahame King.

Contemporary art entries are gathering pace in the secondary art market and a good example is Andrew Browne’s Billboard and Sky – NYC, featured on the front cover of the Leonard Joel catalogue.

A significant highlight is South Australia’s Robert and Jan Saxon’s collection who have spent 45 years assembling vintage and prestige cars, and Chinese ceramics and art.

They initially focussed on Hans Heysen and Will Ashton but had a change of heart when introduced to John Olsen’s work.
