International design auction to intrigue auction goers

Marble and alabaster sculptures, sterling silver, glassware, porcelain, clocks, art and unusual furniture are the highlights of Leonard Joel’s forthcoming International Design & Applied Arts auction from 6pm Thursday October 12 at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.

An early feature (lot 2) is a late 19^th century Victorian white marble statue of Ceres, the goddess of agriculture with a branch of flowers in one hand and sickle in the other.

Another is a large ammonite mounted on a fossilised stone base (lot 5) and an Italian alabaster torso of an Amazon warrior (lot 4).

Unusual is the wood, gilt and gesso floor pedal harp made about 1859-1866 in the Egyptian style by J.F Browne of New York.

Also interesting is an 1880s Victorian trapezoid headlight vaulted skylight which original formed part of Miss Parish’s school for young ladies.

The sterling silver collection features coffee pots, claret jugs, sauce boats, trays and Georgian entrée dishes – with an 18^th century Dutch silver porringer worth examining.

The extensive glassware on offer includes a pair of green glass vases with lustre drops and a fine Bohemian milk glass decanter – along with a pair of Bohemian portrait vases and a Bohemian overlaid glass comport.

Several hand painted Royal Worcester vases and jardinières should attract plenty of attention – as should a pair of Sevres style porcelain urns and a 19^th century Meissen porcelain inset sewing table.

Furniture features include an antique four fold pressed leather screen in the Chinoiserie style, an antique Flemish inlaid side table and a French Chinoiserie bronze mounted and a circa 1880 carved hall table attributed to Gabriel Viardot  (1830-1906).
