Collectors can enter art market through online auction

An excellent opportunity for investors and collectors entering the art market for the first time is currently on offer through GraysOnline with several online art auctions covering a comprehensive range of artists.

Bidding starts at $9 and the auctions have been broken into several categories – unreserved, investment art, corporate works, contemporary art, and Aboriginal art.

Many of the works appear in more than one category.

Bidding for the final works in investment, contemporary, Aboriginal art and corporate works closes at 10pm on Tuesday October 25 – while the unreserved auction finishes at 9.30pm on Wednesday October 26.

There is a separate online auction for antiques, currency, books and collectables, which also finishes at the same time on Wednesday.

Some of the more notable artists in the unreserved auction include Sidney Nolan’s limited edition lithograph The Defence of Aaron Sherritt, Gloria Petyarre’s Bush Medicine Leaves, Judy Cassab’s The Oil Lamp and a Charles Blackman original ink painting. 

Sergio Sill is another artist whose works feature prominently in the same auction with paintings like Seed Sower, Untitled and Titled Verso and Reflection Pool among the offerings. More of his paintings can be found in the corporate auction category.

The unreserved auction also contains several examples of pre-decimal and early decimal currency and a sensational 1780 antique hand coloured world cooper engraved map.

The investment art auction includes works by such well-known Australian artists as Pro Hart (Dragonfly) David Bromley (Butterflies) John Coburn (Study for Dark Desert) and Jeffrey Makin (Cradle Mountain), Ray Crooke (Islander Girls) and Tim Storrier (Camp Out Relay). 

Antiques , currency, books and collectables incudes such interesting items as a vintage pair of bronze children and a colourful Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) Kutani saki bottle with hand painted scenes.
