Brett Whiteley painting achieves auction record

Brett Whiteley’s My Armchair 1976 was knocked down to well-known Melbourne buyer John Playfoot on October 31 at Menzies auction for a new artist record of $3,927,272 (including buyer’s premium).

The result surpasses Whiteley’s previous auction record of $3.48 million (including buyer’s premium) for The Olgas for Ernest Giles sold by Menzies in 2007.

A massive, eye-catching and impressive work, My Armchair was painted at a time when Whiteley won every major art award in Australia.
