Women artists to the fore in Christmas art auction

Several predominantly South Australian rare and collectable modernists comprise the majority of a boutique selection of early 20^th century art that goes under the hammer from 2pm Thursday December 10 at Leonard Joel 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.

The 100 works – from a private Adelaide collection – feature several quality artists who are not necessarily as well known as some of their more famous counterparts.

According to Leonard Joel art manager Maggie Skelton the collection includes several female artists who also followed the post Impressionist style in their works.

“For example, Marie Tuck, a South Australian who lived in France for many years and painted Australian landscapes with an Impressionist influence and fellow post Impressionist artist Rose Lowcay,” she said.

Other women artists of note in the collection include Lisette Kohlhagen – a great linocut and protruder – still life proponent Margaret Preston and Dorrit Black.

Among the South Australian male artists of note are Richard Hayley Lever, Noel Wood and Francis Roy Thompson.

Kohlhagen’s auction pieces include Still Life with Sunflowers and The Old Church Bell, while Lowcay has a painting entitled Autumn Trees and Tuck Village Square Etaples.

Lever’s Luxembourg Gardens, Paris and Wood’s Tropical Landscape are other works worth considering – along with Rex Wood’s Red Dust, Jacqueline Hick’s Sea Dance, Wladyslaw Dutkiewicz's Landscape (Creek with Rocks and Bridges) and Arthur D’Auvergne Boxhall’s Palms and Lagoon.
