Art auction to interest first time buyers

First time art buyers would be well served checking out Leonard Joel’s fine art sale from 6.30pm Tuesday December 1 at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra when 265 paintings will be auctioned – many of them carrying estimates of $1000-$2000.

The paintings cover different periods in Australian art history – from colonial to modern and even some contemporary.

Typical of paintings in this estimate range is Danila Vassilieff Street Scene 1934 (lot 6) and Rubery Bennett’s Rippling Melodies (lot 16).

Slightly higher on the estimate list is Harold Septimus Power’s The Market Place (lot 9), while Robert Dickerson’s Man with Drink pastel charcoal on paper (lot 20) estimate ranges from $4000-$6000.

Pro Hart The Betrayal (lot 23), Hugh Sawrey’s Along the Headwaters of the Condamine, Warwick, QLD (lot 25) and Kenneth Jack’s Omeo (lot 24) are all worthy of buyer examination and could make the perfect gift for Christmas.

Among the more expensive works is Sidney Nolan’s Antarctica 1961 (lot 40) and Chris Canning’s The Artist’s Studio (lot 42) while Henry Gritten’s View of the Yarra, Kew 1872 (lot 51) is a great example of a fine colonial painting.
