A comprehensive and fascinating collection purchased direct from Europe and through Australian specialists will be auctioned from 2pm Sunday September 14 at Mossgreen 926-930 High Street, Armadale.
Comprising more than 400 lots and assembled over four decades, the collection includes rare works of art from the Middle Ages and 15th to 18th centuries and is an unprecedented sale for Australia.
There also is magnificent Italian, French and Spanish furniture and a fine collection of 17th to 19th century textiles and samplers – along with a selection of icons and religious artefacts from the same period.
One of the highlights is a 17th century biblical tapestry from Brussels (lot 80) and another a finely carved lamentation (lot 133), possible origin north Germany, from the early 16th century.
This beautiful piece is in fine condition and retains some of its original gilding. It features a group of figures, including the Virgin Mary, supporting the body of Christ.
A rare limestone southwest French figure of the Virgin and Child from about 1530 (lot 137) is another attraction.
The child holds an apple in his left hand, a symbolic reference to Adam and Eve’s transgression in the Garden of Eden and a reminder that Christ will be sacrificed to redeem humanity.
The auction contains a fine early 17th century rare Italian walnut octagonal table (lot 277) and auction goers also will be drawn to the strong selection of Australian indigenous artefacts, bark paintings and artworks.
A highlight is a 19th century early water carrying vessel (lot 1) and another is a crucifixion study on eucalyptus bark (lot 27) by Burrunday (circa 1914-1970s), inspired by the mission church panels hanging either side of the altar at Yirrkala.
