Warrnambool music icon collection goes to auction

John Reid was a Warrnambool businessman, Rotarian and icon who spent much of his 94 years working for the good of the town.

In 1948, he established an electrical shop, which by 1967 was better known as John Reid’s Music Store where town residents could purchase the latest in musical instruments and records – the place to be seen for any aspiring musician.

For 57 years, he also was an active stalwart of the Warrnambool Rotary Club.

John died earlier this year and Glenelg Auctions has been asked to auction his estate on site at 117 Skene Street, Warrnambool from 11.30am on Sunday September 14.

The auction closely reflects John’s life with a range of musical instruments and early radios up or grabs.

The instruments include violins, guitars, banjos, mandolins, accordions and mouth organs – along with drum skins, amplifiers, tape decks and hundreds of pianola rolls.

The on site workshop contains many of his clock, radio and musical instrument tools, along with woodworking and metal machinery and welding equipment.

Other items include household furniture and effects, whitegoods and outdoor furniture.
