Tudor style country mansion the venue for decorative arts auction

An attractive Tudor-style mansion called The Gables, belonging to a prominent local antiques dealer and situated in the Victorian Western Districts town of Hamilton, is the venue for Christian McCann’s forthcoming on site fine and decorative arts auction from 12pm Sunday June 25 at 69 French Street.
The entire contents are destined to go under the hammer and featuring a superb collection of 18th and 19th century English furniture and French, English and Italian glass chandeliers, the auction is a must for collectors.
The sale includes English and French clocks, a superb walnut pull-repeat timepiece and fine tube chiming longcase variety.
The English and European porcelain is exquisite and includes a rare set of 16th century plates, Sevres and Royal Worcester.
Australian artists are prominent including such names as David Boyd, J.A. Turner J.H. Scheltema, Rubery Bennett, Norman Lindsay, Pro Hart, Hugh Sawrey and Taylor Ghee.
Eye-catching is the pair of palatial proportions hand painted 19th century lidded Sevres vases (lot 79) with a $12,000-$18,000 estimate and two-handled jardinière (lot 80) estimated at $3000-$4500.
A fine quality 19th century French bronze figure of a dancing maiden (lot 54) signed by Dom Vandeer Vossche is another strong attraction at a $10,000-$15,000 catalogue estimate, while among the furniture an English carved oak six-door sideboard ornately carved with cherubs and floral decorations (lot 52) is a standout.
Another furniture piece worth a second look is the 19th century French kidney-shaped kingwood commode (lot 122) with floral marquetry inlay and ormolu mounts.
A 19th century carved giltwood over mantel mirror (lot 33) would suit many homes, while a superb timepiece is a 19th century French ormolu salon clock (lot 88) by Jean-Francois Deniere (1774-1866) who supplied clocks and candelabras to French palaces including Versailles and the Grand Trianon.
An arch-shaped Scarlet boulle salon clock inlaid with brass (lot 115) is another fine example of the timepieces on offer in the auction.
Among the paintings are two David Boyd works of note, one entitled Kids Playing by the Lake (lot 143) and the other Children at the Ocean (lot 118).
Intriguing and unusual is lot 4, a rare and finely modelled antique Viennese cold painted bronze of an Australian kangaroo.
