Even Sidney Nolan’s (1917-1992) lesser works triple estimates when auction buyers get the bug. And so it proved at Melbourne-based Gibson’s Auctions Summer Art sale on February 23 when an oil on paper work entitled Greece (lot 55) changed hands for $3904 (including buyer’s premium) against a catalogue estimate of $800-$1200.
Aboriginal artist Freddie Timms (circa 1944-2017) was another popular target and both his Owl Dreaming 1998 (lot 47) and Kurri Kurri circa 2006 (lot 49) sold respectively for $2196 and $1952 at an auction designed to appeal to first time buyers as well as more established collectors.
The same price was paid for William George Robb’s (1872-1940) Courting Couple in the Garden (lot 146) – while another Sidney Nolan oil on collage on paper entitled Naked Soldiers, ANZAC 1957 (lot 58) brought a respectable $1830.
A Hermann Hohaus (1920-1990) mounted bronze entitled Seated Nude (lot 40) sold for almost as much at $1708.
Nolan again featured with his Descent From the Cross or Gallipoli Soldiers (lot 57) that changed hands for $1586 and for Back of Beyond (lot 56 - $1159).
Minnie Pwerle (1922-2006) was in the action with an Untitled polymer paint on canvas (lot 48 that brought $1464 while a Tim Storrier creation The Flag, Camp at Relay 1977 (lot 5) sold for $1098.
