Australian auction house dodges coronavirus ban with online sale

Gibson’s Auctions is another of Melbourne’s auction houses working its way around the coronavirus pandemic restrictions by holding its forthcoming Chinese & Asian Ceramics and Works of Art sale entirely online.

The auction is scheduled from 10.30am Wednesday April 8 and is a timed online sale with only virtual viewing.

All bids must be placed via Gibson’s Auctions website www.gibsonsauctions.com.au and will be executed immediately against the lot’s reserve or the current highest bid.

Where multiple bids occur in the five minute interval before the lot closes, bidding time will be extended by a further five minutes.

Catalogue estimates for each lot are mainly several hundreds of dollars with three ranging from $800-$1200.

These are lot 12 – a pair of calligraphy scrolls after Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) – lot 124, a Chinese bronze censer with elephant head handles, and lot 132, a circa 1930 Japanese ivory inlaid Shodana.

Interesting is the ink and wash painting entitled Cranes in Sunrise (lot 4) after Renxun (1835-1893), while a Chinese carved jade russet figure of Qilin (lot 21) is not to be missed.

Two Chinese hardstone bracelets (lot 24) and a pair of 20^th century reticulated porcelain barrels with the mark of Qianlong (lot 27) are other attractions.

A late Meiji period Japanese carved ivory netsuke of a Sambaso dancer (lot 41) makes fascinating viewing along with two Chinese russet jade carvings with a malachite figure (lot 52).

Colourful is a Chinese polychrome ginger jar (lot 86) and two large Chinese bronze ceremonial teapots (lot 104) and a Chinese polychrome decorated bowl (lot 119) are bound to attract plenty of attention.
