Australian sculpture John Kendrick Blogg’s (1851-1936) work Old Cronies (lot 27) and Frederick McCubbin’s (1855-1917) painting Untitled (Bush Study, Mount Macedon) (lot 165) shared top billing at Gibson’s Auctions June Melbourne sale entitled The Australian Collection.
Both sold for $9936 (including buyer’s premium) as buyers were keen to snap up as many of the offered lots as possible.
Blogg’s picture frame carved in high relief with a leafy gum branch and gum nuts (lot 22) also was popular, bringing $6548.40 once bidding had stopped.
Graeme Townsend’s painting Fox sold for a healthy $5713.20 (lot 208) while Nancy McDinny’s Untitled acrylic on canvas brought $4222.80 (lot 139).
J.W. Lindt’s (1845-1926) “Juanju” Walunimga Tribe. Gilbert River N.Q. Australia (lot 138) changed hands for $3477.60 while several items were around the $2000-$3000 mark including lot 57 – a large 19th century Kauri pine scullery table ($2980.80) – lot 161, Frederick Woodhouse Senior’s (1820-1829) painting ($2732.40), lot 45, an 1830s cedar colonial dining table, and lot 70, a circa 1910 large pair of gangers lights ($2235.60).
