Silver and bronze elephants trumpet the good auction news

Unusual silver and bronze elephants belonging to a leading Melbourne business identity will be a major highlight of Philips Auctions forthcoming fine and decorative arts sale from noon Sunday June 16 at 47 Glenferrie Road, Malvern.
The 40-strong collection features several fascinating examples including lot 65 – Austrian Franz Bergman’s (1861-1936) bronze rendition showing the elephant with game hunters and a slain tiger.
Another appealing example is WG &Co’s Edwardian jewelled silver gilt elephant pot pourri (lot 162) and Carrington & Co 1929 large sterling silver beast on a stand (lot 193) – while lot 255 contains two late 19th century Meissen groups, Turks riding an elephant and rhinoceros.
The auction also features the balance of the English Victorian Vesta match cases (where matches can be stored and lit by striking on the bottom of the case) collection from the April sale and a massive five-metre long Victorian mahogany dining table.
Other quality furniture includes French Louis XV and Louis XVI style commodes and desks including a 1930s tulipwood desk (lot 370) and an early 1900s parquetry commode arbalete in mixed timbers (lot 383).
There is plenty of sterling silver for auction goers to choose from including two and three light candelabra pairs (lots 175 and 179) a 1964 C.J. Vander Ltd tray weighing four kilograms.
The Monday night jewellery auction (from 6pm) is notable for its Tiffany platinum ring set (lots 118 and 119) and impressive diamond rings (lots 88 and 100).
