An 18th century Qing Dynasty celadon and russet jade boulder carving (lot 617) topped popular demand for Chinese statues, porcelain and other collectables when it changed hands for $15,525 including buyer’s premium at Gibson’s Winter Auction Series Melbourne sale on August 5 and 6.
The 790-lot two-day sale featured more than 200 Chinese items including a Longquan Yuan Dynasty carved celadon dish (lot 743) which sold for $5961.60 and an 18th/19th century circular squat flambe vase heavily potted with thick green and red crackled glaze (lot 756 - $4719.60).
On day one, jewellery was much in demand with lot 8, an emerald, sapphire and ruby set gold cross necklace by Hardy Brothers, attracting the highest price of $13,662.
Other pieces to fare well included a gold Cuban link bracelet (lot 159 - $11,302), a gold ‘Seamaster GMT Chronometer’ Omega wristwatch (lot 174 - $8942) and a gold Georg Jensen bracelet (lot 155 - $7452).
Lots 44 and 66 – three gold curb link chains and a ‘Vizantija’ sapphire, ruby and emerald cross Cartier necklace – respectively changed hands for $6955.20 and $4471.20.
Many of the furniture and other collectable items also attracted plenty of attention with an Eggert & Son New York two-day marine chronometer (lot 429) changing hands for $5713.20.
Other strong sale items included a kaleidoscope, a G. Gyori of Melbourne replica after the original by Wm. Leigh of Newton c1822, (lot 413) which brought $2928, a pair of George II style Chinoiserie red lacquer side chairs (lot 211 - $3229.20) and an 18th century English Chinoiserie decorated black lacquer cabinet (lot 220 - $3974.40).
