French furniture on auction display at St Kilda home

A major array of antique French furniture – ormolu mounted, boulle salon and kingwood marquetry – is the highlight of Christian McCann Auction’s forthcoming on site sale from noon Sunday October 15 at 42 Barkly Street, St Kilda.

The quality French antiques include vitrines, bureau-plat, commodes and carved giltwood – with the major attraction an exhibition Boulle centre table.

Auction goers also can feast their eyes on carved French provincial and decorator furniture including consoles, bergeres, mirrors, dining and boardroom tables, library bookcases and desks.

The auction offers outstanding Chinese works of art, highlighted by two early antique carved deities of massive proportions, carved antique ivory and jade, carved lacquer and early Chinese porcelain.

Clock collectors will be impressed at the quality French and English antique clocks up for grabs. A major drawcard is a rare French mahogany long case clock – along with a palatial three-piece ormolu clock set, Champlevé enamel timepieces, and Ebon and mahogany bracket clocks.

Antique bronze figures and figure groups, many signed by important makers, are another attraction.

Art lovers have not been forgotten with works by leading Australian artists such as Hugh Sawrey, Rubery Bennett, Adrian Flint, Pro Hart, J.H. Scheltema, Andris Jansons, Donald Friend, Ernest Buckmaster and David Boyd among the treasures.

Another auction highlight is an outstanding collection of 19^th century French Sevres ormolu vases, Royal Worcester, Dresden and Meissen.

Among the garden statuary is a palatial size three-metre cherub mounted bronze fountain, and garden urns and benches.
