The catalogue – which covers several art categories from modern classics to Aboriginal, contemporary and timeless collectors – features Hans Heysen’s (1877-1968) Summer Lights, Flinders Ranges 1933 and Young Girl by Emmanuel Phillips Fox (1865-1915), both from a private collection.

International caricatures boost auction scene

Well-known international and Australian figures of the 1980s and 1990s are the focus of a collection of original caricatures by cartoonist and caricaturist Alberto Ricardo to be auctioned from 2pm Thursday November 16 through Leonard Joel at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.

Melbourne Cup auction boosts spring racing fever

With spring racing fever once again gripping Melbourne as the city prepares for the running of the 2017 Melbourne Cup, Leonard Joel has taken the opportunity to entice auction goers to obtain their own piece of racing history.

The auction, from 2pm Thursday November 2 at 333 Malvern Road South Yarra, features a range of racing memorabilia from a metal bust, pin and tribute trophy of iconic Australian racehorse Phar Lap to original photographs of Flemington racecourse taken about 1884.

On the base of the bust are the words “Phar Lap, 37 wins from 51 starts, 1928-32”.

All 228 lots carry very affordable catalogue estimates of a few hundred dollars and there are plenty of bargains to be obtained.

Highlights include a 2006-2016 divers automatic wristwatch and a 1973 chronograph automatic both with day, date and stainless steel cases.

Works by Ludmilla Meilerts will feature strongly at Leonard Joel’s forthcoming first auction devoted only to women artists covering the decades 1900 to 1960.

Meilerts, who lived from 1908 to 1998, fled post World War II Latvia and became a notable Australian artist – a strong testimony to her resilience and determination.

With Fred Williams, she shared fifth prize in Australia’s inaugural 1950 Dunlop Art Prize – with first place going to one of the country’s great modern artists Sidney Nolan.

Early editions of novels by famous Victorian English author Charles Dickens and manuscripts dating back to the 15th century are among Leonard Joel’s Specialist Books auction – featuring a gentleman’s art and reference library – from 2pm Thursday September 28 at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.

The three Dickens novels on offer include the well-known works David Copperfield, Bleak House and Martin Chuzzlewit.

A writer and social critic, Dickens lived from 1812 to 1870 and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.

Rare Persian rugs to appeal to auction goers

A superfine Isfahan pure Persian Caspian silk ground rug is a major highlight of Leonard Joel’s forthcoming Specialist Rugs auction from 2pm Thursday September 21 at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra.

The rug, which features the traditional “tree of life” design, is a master weaver Hossain Mohammadi Atelier creation of 700,000 knots per square metre and carries a catalogue estimate of $7000-$8000.

Other rugs of note in the auction include a superfine Bidjar Tekkab Kork wool pile – a rare and collectable superfine weave of approximately 600,000 knots per square metre.
