Leonard Joel’s latest Jewels & Objets D’Art auction is aimed at offering Sydney collectors a comprehensive range of fine jewellery, wristwatches and unusual art objects.

The sale, from 1pm Sunday November 23 at the Keltie Cove Room in the Intercontinental Sydney Hotel at 33 Cross Street, Double Bay, is an interesting mix of collectables that should appeal to all collector tastes.

Militaria buffs will have the chance to pick up valuable wartime collectables at Glenelg Auction Centre’s forthcoming militaria and collectables auction from 10am Sunday November 23 at Old Kilmore Gaol 8 Sutherland Street, Kilmore.

The auction contains a range of military collectables including Australian military style badges, brass trench Arted shell and various memorabilia from the Third Reich.

Among the antique militaria is an 1850s troopers pattern sword, an 1850s percussion cadet rifle, a boarding cutlass and Remington 1917 model bayonet.

For wine buffs, there is a selection of quality wine and champagne – while bird prints from leading 19th century artist and ornithologist Gracius Broinowski will be up for grabs.

Broinowski was born in 1837 in Poland and, aged 20, swam ashore from a windjammer off Portland Victoria to arrive in Australia.

Of the six auctions Leonard Joel is holding on Thursday November 20, the specialist rug sale is the one that could create the most interest. 

Beginning at 2pm at 333 Malvern Road, South Yarra, the auction features a range of superfine qum, pure Caspian silk examples of various designs including an unusual sunburst medallion set within a secondary hexagonal field of intricate floral motifs.

Other rugs include a fine Bidjar Gholtogh from the Kurdistan region of Iran and a fine Isfahan example featuring a classic Persian design of a floral medallion.

The NSW Parliamentary Library, founded in 1840 as the Library of the Legislative Council of New South Wales, is Australia’s oldest continuously operating official research library.

Collectables and jewellery auction drawcard

The continued disposal of collectables from two estates is another major highlight of Young’s Auctions weekly sale from 9.30am on Friday November 14 at 229 Camberwell Road, East Hawthorn.

The collectables include an antique counter showcase and several oil lamps, along with a silver cigarette box presented in 1950 to board member Mr Thompson at the New Argus newspaper.

The auction contains several items from a company that has been liquidated including an 18-carat gold ring containing a solitaire diamond and two nine-carat gold rings set with sapphires and rubies.
